On Discourse
High school civics was, by far, one of my favorite classes. I really enjoyed learning about government policy and politics. Sadly, I hardly remember any of my U.S. or World History material, but I’m relearning. In my opinion, Will is the kind of teacher every parent should want for their child and every child should want but doesn’t realize it. I’d argue Will is less of a teacher and more of a facilitator. He creates space for ideas to be discussed and works to open people’s minds by infusing the conversation with lessons learned in history to help us understand the potential future consequence of our current action. He does something most of us would be terrified to do, he publicly brings people on to his various platforms to discuss challenging ideas. He’s easily one of the most open minded and humble people I can find on the internet these days, especially in this space. I find him to be an inspiring leader and someone who’s actions we could all learn from.
In our conversation, we talk about his role as a teacher. Social justice concepts in universities. Debate versus conversation. Critical race theory. The human mind. The positive influence he currently sees from religious ritual. The Chinese Communist Party and their influence on Americans. The value of discussing ideas and allowing your own ideas to be challenged. We navigate through a lot.
I hope you take from it what you feel valuable. I hope you enjoy.
